Women are encouraged to do regular breast self-examinations to help detect any signs or symptoms of breast cancer, but some may have questions on what to look for.
A special event taking place at KC's Boutique in Longwood Station Sunday (July 14) allows women to get a hands-on education to help answer their questions.
From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., the store will have a table set up with information about breast cancer and mock silicone breasts, courtesy of B.C. Mitchell Prosthetic and Orthotic Services Ltd., that allow you to feel four different types of lumps.
"You have to kind of feel for it, which teaches you how to do that," said Karen Griffin, co-owner of KC's Boutique, adding that she thought her own customers could benefit from the experience.
"It's definitely our age group," she said. "We just feel that it's nice to look after our customers. It's a customer awareness piece."
Griffin got the idea to host a breast cancer awareness event in the store after seeing B.D. Mitchell's educational display at the West Coast Women's Show earlier this spring.
A certified mastectomy fitter from B.D. Mitchell will also be at the store on Sunday to do bra fittings for prosthetic breasts.
