How To Give Pills To An Obstinate Cat Or Dog ? Article Meeting

We cat and dog lovers appreciate the vexation and difficulty associated with giving our cats and dogs medicine. If we?re in luck and have a liquid-based medicine (e.g. an herbal extract), giving it to your pet is somewhat straightforward. Unfortunately, if the medicine is in pill form, we may have to overcome a degree of opposition.

Before we attempt to aggressively compel our pet to swallow a pill ? or cunningly hiding the medicine inside snacks ? let?s look at how vets give pills to their charges. Using a few uncomplicated strategies practised by these professionals will make the activity much less troublesome for us and less stressful for the animal.

* Step 1. Calm down the animal by playing with it in your usual fashion. Use a toy if your dog or cat is accustomed to this. Don?t overdo it; simply play with the animal until his or her spirits get better.

* Step 2. Make sure you are at a similar level as the pet. If the animal is relatively large, kneel down beside your animal while he or she is sitting. If, on the other hand, your pet is small, pick the animal up and place him or her on a work surface or grooming table.

* Step 3. Put a single hand over the dog or cat?s muzzle (the area right between the pet?s nose and eyes) while holding the pill in the other hand. Make sure you hide the pill from the pet or it may become anxious, and that might prevent successful administration.

* Step 4. Delicately open the dog or cat?s mouth using the hand that is holding the pill. Position the pill at the rear of the tongue and close the cat or dog?s mouth.

* Step 5. Hold the dog or cat?s mouth shut at the same time as you lightly blow on the tip of its nose. Doing this will persuade the animal to swallow on reflex before he has an opportunity to spit the medicine back out again.

* Step 6. Give the cat or dog a treat immediately after the pet swallows the pill to make sure that it is not stuck in his or her throat or stored in one side of his mouth.

* Step 7. End the procedure with praise and play to inspire better cooperation in future attempts. Wait at least 10 minutes before trying to give additional medication.

Hints:

Praise your dog or cat as you perform each step. This will help the dog or cat relax and build trust throughout the proceedings.

Don?t forget too that liquid medication is more bioavailable, and that?s because it?s up to five times more absorbable than pills or granules.
