Government blacklists certain foods in schools | LawInfo Blog

On Friday, the Agriculture Department proposed new rules that would ban certain junk foods in schools.? According to a news source, ?the Agriculture Department would set fat, calorie, sugar and sodium limits on almost all foods sold in schools.?? The Agriculture Department?s goal is to introduce healthier food alternatives to kids in an attempt to fight childhood obesity.? If these new rules are finalized, it would be the first time foods sold outside the lunchroom will be regulated by the federal government.

New Rules:

  • Snacks have to have less than 200 calories.
  • Drinks sold at elementary and middle schools would be limited to water, low-fat milk or 100 percent fruit or vegetable juice.
  • High schools could sell some sports drinks, diet sodas and iced teas.
  • Drinks sold in middle schools would be limited to 12-ounce portions.
  • Drinks sold in elementary schools would have to be 8-ounces.

Which Foods are on the government?s Blacklist?

The new rules would remove the following foods and foods similar to these from lunch lines and vending machines:

  • Fatty chips
  • Snack cakes
  • Nachos
  • Mozzarella sticks

Schools would have to replace fatty foods with healthier alternatives, such as baked chips, trail mix, diet sodas, lower-calorie sports drinks and low-fat hamburgers.

According to the news, a final rule regarding these new rules could be in place by 2014.

What do you think?? Should the federal government regulate what kids eat while at school?
