To celebrate another year of the tastebud-tantalising Comida di Buteco (Brazilian bar snack festival) we have three more recipes for you to try at home

Annual Brazilian bar snack festival, Comida di Buteco has officially finished. Take a look at three recipes from Belo Horizonte from this year's festival below.

Brazilian bruschettas

Ingredients:

3 small baguettes
2 tbsp mayonnaise
15g of capers
15g of Gorgonzola
15g of anchovies
6 fine slices of calabresa (Brazilian smoked sausage)
3 slices of ham
4 small tomatoes cut into slices
3 basil leaves
1 tbsp honey
dried garlic
finely chopped herbs
olive oil
250g of half cured grated cheese

For the skewers:

60g of goiabada casc?o (guava quince)
120g of half cured cheese

To prepare:

1. Cut the baguettes in half and slice open, spread on the mayonnaise and place in a roasting pan.

2. Sprinkle the grated cheese over the baguettes; on three of the 12 pieces place two slices of calabresa, Gorgonzola and some dried garlic. On another three place a slice of ham and capers; on another three the slices of anchovies, three tomatoes and some garlic; and on the remaining three some honey. Then to finish, drizzle olive oil over the top.

3. Place in the oven at 200?C until golden brown. Arrange on a plate and place the basil leaves on the bruschettas with capers.

To prepare the skewers:

1. Cut the cheese and goiabada into small pieces; skewer onto toothpicks.

'It?s a Lora thing'

Ingredients:

200g of ribs
200g of cupim (roasted or stewed cut of beef)
150g baby potatoes
vegetable stock
finely chopped herbs
olive oil
cayenne peppers
150g of Minas cheese

For the sauce:

2 tsp of butter
1 tbsp of sifted wheat flour
300ml of milk
150g of half cured Minas cheese
1 onion
1 bay leaf
1 pinch of grated nutmeg
1 pinch of salt

For the garnish:

mayonnaise
spring onions and parsley

To prepare:

1. Season the ribs and cook at a low heat until tender. Put aside.

2. Season and cook the cupim in a pressure cooker until tender. Put aside.

3. Cook the baby potatoes in vegetable stock, drain, then season with oil, finely chopped herbs, cayenne peppers and put aside.

4. Cut the Minas cheese into cubes and season with olive oil, finely chopped herbs, cayenne pepper and put aside.

To prepare the sauce:

1. Gently fry the butter and wheat flour in a pan until golden. Add the milk, onion, whole bay leaf, nutmeg and salt. Simmer until the wheat flour is cooked. Take off the heat and sieve.

2. Then place in the blender and blend with the Minas cheese.

How to serve:

1. Grill the cupim and the ribs on separate baking trays and place in gravy. Pour on the
cheese sauce and garnish with mayonnaise, spring onions and parsley.

Gerais Gold

Ingredients:

For creamed cassava with cheese:

500g cassava
1 cup of grated Minas cheese
1 cup of cream
1 roughly chopped onion
1 tbsp of butter
1 tbsp of garlic seasoning and salt
750ml of water

For sun-dried meat:

1kg braising meat
1 tbsp of salt
1 tbsp of creamy onion soup
2 tbsp of manteiga de garrafa (bottled butter)
300ml water
oil

For polenta balls stuffed with cheese:

500g cornmeal
500ml water
half a tbsp of salt
2 tbsp sour cassava flour
oil
Minas cheese cut into medium-sized cubes

To prepare:

1. Creamed cassava with cheese: blend the cooked cassava in the blender with the water.

2. Saut? the onion with the butter and season, then add the blended cassava. Cook until the mixture starts to boil, then add the Minas cheese and the cream at a low heat.

3. Sun-dried meat: cut the meat open like a large steak, sprinkle with salt on both sides and leave to marinate in the fridge for three days.

4. Cut into medium-sized cubes. Place the meat in a pressure cooker with the bottled butter and the creamy onion soup. Add the water and leave to cook for 10 minutes.

5. After the meat has cooked, deep fry.

To prepare the polenta balls stuffed with cheese:

1. Boil some salted water. Dissolve the cornmeal in a little water, then add to the boiled water. Blend for 20 minutes.

2. Pour the polenta into a bowl and mix in the sour cassava flour. Leave to cool.

3. To make the balls, take a piece of dough, open it up in your hand, place a cube of cheese inside and roll until it forms a ball. Tip ? moisten your hand with water
beforehand, to help with rolling the balls. Deep fry.

Brazilian chef, Eduardo Maya is the creator of Comida di Buteco ? an annual month-long bar food festival celebrated in Brazil during April. Originally just in Belo Horizonte, he decided to create a contest that would revitalise the local snack bars, so characteristic
to the city.?

Today, 12 years later, the competition has spread across the whole country with 16 cities in Brazil participating ? the newest addition being S?o Paulo. Food is taken very seriously in the city and offers visitors a fusion of flavours and tastes thanks to its multi-cultural residents.

At the least, Rep. Coffman had the decency to apologize for his dim-witted views. ?Once again, how can the American people expect Congress to function properly when so many (62 to be in fact) Congressional members are refusing to believe in facts, and instead rely on rumors and hearsay. Their test involved having healthy volunteers confined to bed rest for 30 days; 'the technique was able to detect bone loss after as little as one week of bed rest.' Bone loss is an issue for astronauts as well as people affected by osteoporosis. They expect this test will help detect bone loss as a symptom of osteoporosis, but have not yet done a trial to confirm this. This is another point against anyone who claims NASA, and going to space in general, is a complete waste of money."

According to media releases from the relevant companies, two significant trials (of enzalutamide and of cabozantinib) are already or will soon be recruiting men with metastatic, castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC).

In the first case, a media release from Medivation and from Astellas Pharma has announced the initiation of an expanded access trial of enzalutamide open to men with mCRPC who have cancer progression after prior treatment with docetaxel-based chemotherapy. Additional information about this trial (which will recruit patients at up to 75 centers in the USA) is already available on the ClinicalTrials.gov web site. Patients are already being recruited at 12 different centers around the country (of which seven are listed on the ClinicalTrials.gov web site).

In the second case, Exelixis has announced initiation of the so-called COMET-1 trial, which is a pivotal, randomized, Phase III? clinical trial of cabozantinib alone versus prednisone alone in men with mCRPC who have disease progression after prior treatment with docetaxel-based chemotherapy and either abiraterone acetate + prednisone or enzalutamide (also known as MDV3100). The primary endpoint for the COMET-1 study is overall survival, and Exelixis expects early data from COMET-1 to be available in the first half of 2014. Further information about the COMET-1 trial is also available on the ClinicalTrials.gov web site; as yet, however, this trial is not ready to recruit patients

Students continuing their education after college are likely to find that they will be financing graduate school themselves. No worries ? there are a number of resources available to finance a graduate education. Most grad students get financial help in the way of fellowships, employer tuition reimbursement, loans that are private or federal and teaching or research positions at the school they are attending. Countless graduate students use a combination of these kinds of financial aid.

Grants and Fellowships

Fellowships and grants are sought after financial award that do not require or ask for repayment. Usually they are offered by a school, an organization or even the federal government. They cover complete or partial tuition and may include an allowance for living expenses. Generally they are given based on a combination of academic merit and financial need. Often, grants and fellowships are used to attract a specific demographic such as women or minorities.

Teaching Assistant Positions

Some graduate students are employed as Teaching Assistants or TAs. Working about 20 hours per week during the academic year they are paid in the form of financial aid. A TA may lead discussion groups and lab sections of undergraduate courses taught by the school?s faculty.

Research Assistants

A research assistant is usually found in in scientific and engineering fields. These positions have a graduate student work on a research project. As compensation the student gets paid tuition and a stipend for living expenses.

Employer Tuition Reimbursement

A large number of employer offer full or partial tuition reimbursement for their employees attending graduate school. Check with your company?s Human Resources department to find out if they offer tuition support and what the conditions of that support are.

Federal Work-Study Program

Work-study programs provide part-time jobs for students who are enrolled in graduate school. Whenever possible, the work involves community service or is related to the student?s field of study.

Federal Graduate Student Loans

Graduate students who can prove financial need can be eligible to apply for federal loans. Depending on need the loan can be subsidized. If it is a subsidized federal loan interest does not begin to accrue until the loan repayment starts. Unsubsidized federal loans accrue interest from the time the money is first loaned to the student. There are three kinds of federal loans for graduate students:

Stafford Loans
Perkins Loans ? administered by the school
PLUS Loans

Loan Forgiveness Programs

Graduate students can have their federal loans forgiven if they work in public service or for a non-profit organization. This is a great option for financing a graduate degree. These programs are sponsored by schools, state government and the federal government. In return for working a specific length of time following graduation a student gets a fixed percentage of loan repayment.

Private Loans

Private loans should be the last resort for financing graduate school education. They have higher interest rates and usually begin to accrue interest while the student is at graduate school.

Drug Used for Schizophrenia May Check Cancer Researchers report that an antipsychotic drug sometimes used to treat schizophrenia appears to influence cancer stem cells to differentiate into less threatening cell types.

Investigators believe the discovery will be followed with a clinical trial. The findings are reported in the journal Cell.

In the study, scientists analyzed hundreds of compounds in search of those that would selectively inhibit human cancer stem cells.?You have to find something that?s truly selective for cancer stem cells,? said Mickie Bhatia, lPh.D., lead author of the study from McMaster University. ?We?ve been working for some time and it?s hard to find that exact formula.?

The research represents a new approach for cancer intervention, a necessary approach as the survival of cancer patients is largely unchanged from 30 years ago.

The new approach for cancer targets rare and chemotherapy-resistant cancer stem cells. Unlike normal stem cells, cancer stem cells resist differentiating into stable, non-dividing cell types.

Bhatia?s team exploited this difference to simultaneously screen compounds for their activity against human cancer stem cells versus normal human stem cells.

By testing hundreds of compounds, they identified nearly 20 potential cancer stem cell specific drugs.

The one that appeared most promising is an antipsychotic drug, thioridazine, which combats the symptoms of schizophrenia by targeting dopamine receptors in the brain. But concerns about side effects of the drug, brand name Mellaril, have meant that far fewer people with schizophrenia are prescribed the drug than newer antipsychotic medications.

Researchers say thioridazine doesn?t appear to kill cancer stem cells, but rather encourages them to differentiate, thus exhausting the pool of self-renewing cells.

Investigators discovered thioridazine kills leukemia stem cells without affecting normal blood stem cells by comparing the proteins in leukemia versus normal blood cells.

Furthermore, leukemia cells, but not normal blood stem cells, express a dopamine receptor on their surfaces. This finding is supported by the discovery of dopamine receptors on some breast cancer stem cells.

?This gives us some explanation,? Bhatia said. It also suggests that dopamine receptors might serve as a biomarker for rare, tumor-initiating cells.

In light of the findings, Bhatia?s team is already planning for a clinical trial of the FDA-approved thioridazine in combination with standard anti-cancer drugs for adult acute myeloid leukemia.

Above are some snaps of the pretty packaging, and writing this post reminded me of a conversation (slash argument) I had with a few people when I was working as a chef in a BOILING hot kitchen one summer, when someone said it was too hot to drink tea and someone else retaliated with ?oh no it isn't! it helps to cool you down!? so I googled it, and found arguments for and against so i?ll let you make your mind up! As the art world begins to reassess the YBA (Young British Artists) legacy with Damien Hirst?s current retrospective at Tate Modern and the Hayward Gallery?s look at Tracey Emin last year, Sarah Lucas proves that the movement?s original experimental fervor is still alive and well. Lucas will curate four shows over the course of 2012 for Sadie Coles HQ?s new space, Situation, on New Burlington Place in London. The artist brings together her old and new works in combination with the art of other intimate compatriots, including that of her partner, Julian Simmons. The gallery has already hosted two Situation shows this year, ?Miss Jumbo Savaloy? and ?Make Love,? which highlight Lucas?s command of everyday materials, like concrete, pantyhose, coat hangers and light bulbs. Lucas will direct related programming to coincide with the exhibitions throughout the year. Sadie Coles will publish a catalogue documenting Lucas? work from 2005 to the present, entitled After 2005, Before 2012, picking up where her current catalogue raisonn? leaves off.

Sarah Lucas graduated from Goldsmiths College and participated in 1988?s ?Freeze? exhibition and Charles Saatchi?s ?Sensation? in 1997. Originally known for her cheeky reproductions of sex scandals and racy photographs from tabloid newspapers and a preoccupation with the perverse urbanity of London, the artist shies away from the spotlight. Lucas shuns her contemporaries? focus on the market in favor of concentration in the studio, stating, ?I really?like?the idea that art is not just its value; in the same way that everything else has a value. You might make a concrete sculpture, but it might be better than that brass one even if the brass is worth more. That, that?s not where the value is.? Though Lucas and Tracey Emin sold their art and other sexually charged trinkets, such as wire penises and t-shirts emblazoned with phrases like ?I?m so fucky,? in their own ?The Shop? in East London almost 20 years ago, Lucas continues to maintain a similar rough and ready, artist-driven vibe for her Sadie Coles? exhibitions.

Lucas?s artistic practice often involves travel to specific locales that engage her creatively. Situation provides the space to bring these works home and pair them with the artist?s older pieces. Responding to particular places and times, Lucas continues to work as ?when I was little, just making things, because I always did, to keep myself company.? Attracted to the idea of disturbing sensuality, Lucas?s early work relies on rude jokes and suggestive pairings like her famous self-portrait in which she places fried eggs upon her chest. Her recent sculptures and installations currently on view in ?Make Love? visualize themes of surrealist eroticism and feminist politics with tuberous forms constructed from stuffed nylon stockings and contorted into plays on animal forms (See Tit Teddy and Pussy) and other sausage-like amalgams of sexual appendages mounted upon varied pedestals, including concrete blocks, chairs, and ironing boards. Conceptually and formally indebted to French-American artist Louise Bourgeois, Lucas pushes her work into the realm of today?s crass, physical contemporaneity. While driven by feminist ideals, Lucas continues to make art that poses questions, rather than preaches. Despite her wariness of fame, Lucas will gain more exposure this July, when her solo survey exhibition, ?Ordinary Things,? opens at the Henry Moore Institute.
