Crying About Copywriters|SEO PAL Blog

Spelling and grammar mistakes should not be found in a writer?s work, but we are only human. After a long day even the most vigilant of writer could miss something and click the submit button without noticing they have made mistakes. While I am not trying to suggest that mistakes are acceptable they are sometimes understandable.

What is also important when producing SEO copy however, is to create something that the reader will enjoy. If you make reading a chore then people will not want to read what you have produced. SEO copy that is not enjoyable to read will not be used on other sites and will not encourage visitors to stay on your site.

Too Many, Commas, And Ellipses

Yes, the above header is an ironic example. While commas and ellipses are among the best weapons a writer could have in their arsenal they can become very irritating if not used correctly. They are great for breaking up long sentences into something more palatable and placing emphasis on particular words to help convey the correct meaning. They help the copy to flow so that it is easy to read and easy to absorb. Using too many of them has the exact opposite effect. With too many commas and ellipses the text becomes choppy to read, with stops and starts that kill any fluidity the text may have. If you have a flowing passage of text, why disrupt that flow and make it harder to read?

Long Sentences

Reading long sentences can often feel as though you are speaking without taking a breath and without allowing others to absorb what you have said. Give the reader time to absorb what they have read and allow their mind to interpret it into something meaningful. A full stop here and there will make your copy less of a chore and more of a pleasure.

Verbose Sentences

Why use 10 words when 3 will do? A lot of writers seem unable to get to the point and instead go rambling on about something unnecessarily. What the reader wants is for the writer to say what they want to say right away so they can then move on with the rest of the topic. We probably all know somebody that will take 5 minutes to let us know that it is raining heavily outside. It is irritating and boring so instead why not say just that: It?s raining heavily outside. An analogy is fine provided it makes sense but again: Keep it as short as possible.

Sesquipedalian?Words

Yep, I had to Google that one myself. So well done, you have managed to use a big word with lots of syllables. Everybody is really impressed aren?t they? Of course not! Nobody wants to read your pretentious ramblings as you try to impress people with sesquipedalian words (sorry, couldn?t resist the irony). Keep it nice and simple, if you want to say ?big words? then say ?big words?. Everybody knows exactly what you mean so there is no need to overdo it whatsoever.

If you think that producing good quality SEO copy is all about spelling and using the right keywords then think again. With the search engines producing new algorithms to identify websites that offer something that is useful and enjoyable to the reader, SEO copy now needs to be better than it has ever been before.
