The new $6.9 million Girraween Sports Complex at Sunshine Beach is complete and the result is a multi-use, district-level sport and recreation facility and home to Noosa Lions Football Club and Noosa Branch Little Athletics Centre Inc.
The complex ? developed by Sunshine Coast Council in consultation with local sporting groups ? features two senior and two junior football fields, athletics grass track and facilities, the only criterium cycling circuit on the Coast that can host a regional competition, clubhouse and amenities and car parking.
Division 11 Councillor Russell Green said the new complex offered a range of high quality amenities and presented numerous opportunities to the community.
?The Girraween Sports Complex boasts great facilities that can cater for a wide range of users, including sporting organisations, schools, community groups, cyclists, tri-athletes and community members,? said Cr Green.
?The Noosa Lions Football Club and Noosa Little Athletics Club are excited to be in their new clubhouse and it will be fantastic to see the complex attract district-level sporting events to the area.?
Economic Development (Tourism, Sport and Major Events) Portfolio Councillor Jason O?Pray said that in addition to those community benefits, the complex has sustainable aspects to benefit the region.
?The complex incorporates a number of eco-friendly elements including the use of a degraded site, class A recycled water irrigation and revegetation to the surrounding perimeter,? said Cr O?Pray.
President of the Noosa Lions Football Club, Alan Taylor, said the club was excited to relocate to the new complex.
?This complex has one of the finest football venues on the Coast and it will help us to grow our code in the region ? we hope to attract many more players to our club with these great facilities. We are very grateful to council and the State Government for the funds and effort that have gone into this complex,? said Mr Taylor.
Ben Kersten, Director of iPro Cycling and one of Australia?s most successful track cyclists, said many local cyclists were excited about the new criterium track and were anticipating the first race at the complex.
?Cycling is growing exponentially and this investment for the Sunshine Coast is perfectly timed ? it is the perfect place for anyone to cycle off the roads and away from the traffic,? said Mr Kersten.
Other features of the complex include a 100 seat clubroom, offices, kitchen, first aid and referees room.
The Queensland Government contributed $1.5 million towards the project as part of an initiative to encourage more Queenslanders to get involved in recreation and sport.
