Washington, DC--(ENEWSPF)--March 30, 2012. ?A nearly 15-year fight in the nation?s capital to allow patients suffering from cancer, HIV/AIDS and other diseases to use marijuana with a doctor?s recommendation has reached a crescendo, with the city naming six locations that will be allowed to grow medical marijuana legally under local law (including a company partly owned by celebrity talk show host Montel Williams). The announcement, which is sure to irk the Obama administration and some in Congress, comes at a time when U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder and the Justice Department are waging an unprecedented war on medical marijuana patients and providers in numerous states.

?The mayor and council should be commended for moving forward with DC?s medical marijuana program, even though the Obama administration has declared open season on medical patients and providers,? said Bill Piper, director of national affairs for the Drug Policy Alliance. ?Medical marijuana will soon be growing just blocks from the White House and Congress ? opponents of a compassionate marijuana policy need to realize that they?re on the losing side of history.?

DC voters first approved medical marijuana in 1998 but Congress blocked implementation of the ballot measure by prohibiting the district from enacting the law. That prohibition was repealed by Congress in 2009 and in 2010 the DC Council unanimously approved medical marijuana legislation, joining 16 states that allow patients to use marijuana with a doctor?s recommendation. The DC law allows up to ten cultivation centers and eight medical marijuana dispensaries to operate in the district. The locations of the medical marijuana dispensaries will be announced later this year.

Medical marijuana advocates worry about how the Obama administration will react. As a candidate for president, Obama said both that he supported the right of doctors to recommend marijuana to their patients, and that he would stop the federal government from wasting law enforcement resources on raiding, arresting and prosecuting people for medical marijuana, especially if they are complying with their state law. He made due on this promise in his first year in the White House. The Department of Justice issued guidance to US Attorneys urging them not to waste resources prosecuting people for medical marijuana who are in compliance with their state?s law.

In the last year, however, the Obama administration has changed course. The DEA has increased its raids on medical marijuana dispensaries. US Attorneys have sent letters to landlords who rent office space to dispensaries threatening to arrest them and seize their buildings under asset forfeiture laws. The Treasury Department has threatened to prosecute banks that open checking or savings accounts for dispensaries. The IRS has denied dispensaries the ordinary business expense deductions allowed for all other forms of businesses. The ATF has said that any medical marijuana patient who possesses a firearm will get ten years in federal prison. US Attorneys have even sent letters to state legislators and governors, timed to influence state decision-making processes, declaring that they might arrest people in their state if they pass a medical marijuana law or amend or expand existing medical marijuana laws.

Patient advocates worry that patients will lack access to the medicine they need if the Obama administration raids DC?s medical marijuana dispensaries and cultivation centers. Unlike most medical marijuana states, DC law prohibits patients from cultivating their own marijuana. DC is also the only medical marijuana state to make it a crime for a patient to possess marijuana not bought from a dispensary. If the Justice Department shuts down DC?s medical marijuana dispensaries and cancer, HIV/AIDS and other patients are forced to buy marijuana off the streets, they will face arrest, prosecution and incarceration.

?Given the Obama administration?s ongoing war on medical marijuana dispensaries, it is irresponsible of the DC Council not to allow patients to grown their own ? and it?s outright cruel to subject them to jail time for obtaining their medicine from whatever source they can,? said Piper. ?The DC Council should pass emergency legislation providing for a back-up plan in case the federal government shuts down local dispensaries.?

This year, Get Your Rear in Gear presented the Presbyterian Hospital Foundation with a $10,000 grant to create a Financial Assistance Program for colorectal cancer patients in the Queen City. This program is designed specifically for colorectal patients currently under treatment. ?Eligible patients receive a $250 grant which is designed to help them pay everyday expenses while in treatment. ?No one should have to decide between paying their electric bill or paying for chemotherapy,? said Susan Falco, Charlotte co-director. The fund is being administered by the Buddy Kemp Cancer Support Center, which takes patient referrals from nurses and social workers who have daily contact with these patients and have a unique understanding of their financial needs.

Since the inaugural Get Your Rear in Gear Charlotte 5K event in 2010, over $115,000.00 has been raised for colorectal cancer awareness and support programs in the Charlotte, N.C.-area.

Get Your Rear In Gear Charlotte has also partnered with the Buddy Kemp Cancer Support Center to provide a grant to start Charlotte?s first-ever Colorectal Cancer Survivor Support Group.? This group is dedicated to providing all colorectal cancer survivors with much needed educational and emotional support.? The group meets on the first Monday of each month from 6pm-7:30pm at the Buddy Kemp Cancer Support Center. ?Funds raised at the events have also been used to provide financial assistance for colonoscopies for the uninsured.

Here it is, the portrait HDMI Desktop Dock for the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. After months and months of waiting, a couple of retailers have brought it to our shores for your friends here at DL to poke at. It will run you $60 plus shipping, so the big question you all have is, ?Is it worth it?? Let us find out.?

Before we get started, a brief overview of the dock itself is in store. It?s made of really solid plastic in a similar color to the phone itself, has a non-slip rubber grip pad on the bottom, a microUSB port on the back, full HDMI port on the side, and that?s pretty much it. It doesn?t have space for an additional battery to charge like some docks and there isn?t an audio-out cable like on the POGO dock?- HDMI and microUSB is it. Overall, the build feels nice and looks as good as the Nexus.

Extended battery support? Yessir, the Galaxy Nexus LTE fits perfectly in the dock even with the extended battery attached.

What about functionality? This is where things get a little tricky and potentially incredibly disappointing. The dock works wonderfully as a charging mechanism, but the HDMI port and its capabilities are limited. All you can use HDMI-out for on this device, is to watch movies. I?m not kidding. You won?t find HDMI mirroring anywhere near this pup, something the instruction manual says as clear as day (photo below). Also, if you plug a microUSB from the dock to your computer, you can?t sync files or move things around. They actually recommend that you do not?try to charge your phone through the dock and a computer. It?s a charging dock that can play videos to your HD device and nothing more.

Worth it in the end? Until a developer finds a way to unlock full HDMI mirroring capabilities, the HDMI-out portion is essentially worthless for every day use. Sure, it works well for watching videos that you have recorded on your phone , but how often does one actually do that? And without the ability to sync to a PC, it really is only good for charging. It looks nice and charges well, but at $60, you may want to pass on this one.

GPS technology has improved operations in many industries including aviation, environmental sciences, marine, road and railroads, and surveying. Countless activities like the plowing of farm fields, banking and even the management of electricity power grids, are enhanced by the accurate information provided by GPS. Aircraft pilots, surveyors, boaters and countless others perform their work more efficiently and safely using GPS.

The GPS is a utility owned by the USA government focused on providing positioning, navigation and timing services to civilian as well as government, military and business users free of charge. Anyone with a GPS receiver can receive location and time information from the system. The system consists of three components.

Firstly, satellites orbiting the earth in low space. Secondly, control bases in various countries on earth. And finally, the individual GPS devices owned by millions of users. The satellites and control stations are operated day-to-day by the US Air Force.

The GPS started operation with 24 satellites but now has up to 32 in operation. The greater the number of satellites in operation the greater is the accuracy and reliability of the system. Each satellite is strategically positioned in low space about 12,000 miles above the surface of earth. They all move in a fixed, pre-determined orbit. At any instant in time, all areas on earth are capable of receiving signals 24x7x365 transmitted by multiple satellites.

Signal acquisition can sometimes be difficult for GPS receivers. Signal acquisition time can vary depending on the specific topographical and meteorological conditions surrounding a device. Highly sensitive antennas built-in to most GPS devices are designed to allow rapid signal acquisition even in heavily forested areas, thick cloud cover, stormy and overcast weather and so on. However, extreme topographical and meteorological conditions can delay or even prevent a device from receiving satellite signals at all (such as narrow, deep gorges).

Each satellite transmits radio microwaves one-way down to earth so as to blanket a large portion of its surface. Collectively, the full fleet of satellites ensures blanket coverage from 70 degrees north to south of the equator. Areas from the poles to 70 degrees latitude north and south are not serviced by the GPS system; they rely on a similar system operated by European governments.

At the push of a button, these specially-enabled GPS devices transmit their location coordinates, along with a personalized identification code, to the Search And Rescue Satellite Aided Tracking (SARSAT) satellites. This instantly alerts search and rescue (SAR) forces that the user needs emergency assistance. All of this happens within minutes. This GPS technology has greatly improved the safety of maany outdoor and extreme sports.

Mercedes' hopes of delivering on its strong winter testing form have received a boost, with the FIA confirming ahead of the Australian Grand Prix that a radical wing concept the team has pioneered is fully legal.

The Brackley-based outfit stirred up interest from its rivals throughout pre-season testing with its W03 featuring its own version of a rear-wing F-duct concept - that some suspected was activated by vents being opened when the upper wing elements moves during DRS activation.

It is understood that rival teams queried the legality of such a system ? which vents the air through the endplates and in to the main plane, to help stall the wing and boost straight-line speed ? with the FIA.

However, despite the way the system effectively makes use of driver movement when he activates the DRS, the FIA has no doubts that it complies with the regulations.

When asked by AUTOSPORT to clarify the situation, the head of the FIA's F1 technical department Charlie Whiting said: "Some teams are questioning it on the basis that they thought F-ducts were banned. Well, F-ducts are not banned.

"At the end of 2010 everyone was using driver operated F-ducts and the regulations that were changed specifically banned the use of driver movement to influence the aerodynamic performance of the car ? that got rid of that generation of so-called F-ducts.

"At the beginning of last year, with engineers being unable to unlearn things, they wanted to try and get the effect via different means, and they talked about opening and closing a duct by having interaction with the suspension. We said no, you cannot do that because that is not the primary purpose of the suspension system ? which is to insulate the car from undulations in the road.

"There was then a lengthy discussion in the TWG at the beginning of last year about that, to make sure everyone was clear about it. It seems a couple of teams went away from that meeting with the impression that F-ducts were banned in general. Whatever an F-duct is. But they are not."

Whiting would not reveal further details of how the Mercedes system works, but said that he viewed it as completely passive.

"What it appears some teams are doing is that when the DRS is operated, it will allow air to pass into a duct and do other things," he explained.

"That is all I can say ? you will probably have a pretty good idea of what it might be doing, and other teams will as well. But it is completely passive. There are no moving parts in it; it doesn't interact with any suspension. No steering, nothing. Therefore I cannot see a rule that prohibits it."
