Perry pushes his status as a conservative outsider (AP)

SIOUX CITY, Iowa ? Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry, campaigning in Iowa's heavily conservative northwest corner the day before Tuesday's caucuses, urged conservatives to support one of their own who hasn't been part of the Washington and Wall Street establishments.

Perry continued to have trouble with the details as he addressed potential supporters in a Sioux City hotel lobby Monday afternoon. In challenging rival Rick Santorum's support for home-state projects funded with federal money, the Texas governor referred to "the Bridge to Nowhere in Arizona." Actually, the project that became a symbol of runaway pork-barrel spending was planned for Alaska.

Perry singled out Santorum, whose recent rise in polling appears to come at the expense of the Texas governor and Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn. The three are widely seen as competing for the more conservative caucus-goers, particularly evangelicals driven by social issues, in the contest to pick a challenger to President Barack Obama.

"He's raised the debt limit more than Obama's raised the debt limit," Perry said of Santorum, pointing to the former Pennsylvania congressman and senator's eight votes to increase the nation's borrowing power.

Turning to another rival, Rep. Ron Paul, Perry said the Texas congressman's foreign policy was tantamount to "appeasement."

"We will be living in the 1930s again," he said. "Let me tell you, when Ron Paul is further to the left on foreign policy than Barack Obama, that ought to tell you something. That is a dangerous situation."

Perry challenged his rivals' potential and cited his own record as Texas' longest-serving governor in arguing for his candidacy.

"Why would you settle for anything other than an authentic conservative who will fight for your views and values and not make an apology for them, not one time?" he asked. "Are we going to replace a Democrat insider with a Republican insider and expect to get any change in Washington, D.C.?"

Continuing his core argument that he has experience creating jobs and dealing with issues that face the nation, he said: "It's easy to get up and say, `You know, gee, I wish I'd have been on the field, I would have run that touchdown in.' ... We done it in Texas."

While Perry acknowledged his struggle to rise in the polls, he likened the GOP nomination race to a marathon.

"I've run a marathon before. I felt great at mile one. As a matter of fact, I felt great at mile 17 and 18. Mile 21? You kind of start hitting that wall," he said. "We'll see who is still standing at mile 21. I finished my marathon, and I expect to finish this marathon as well."

Mindful of Christian conservatives' sway, he reminded them of his own faith.

"If you elect me president, I will take those values with me to the White House where they will be on display every day," he said. "I will make you this pact: If you have my back tomorrow at the caucuses, I'll have your back for the next four years in Washington, D.C."

Switched On: The 2011 Switchies

Each week Ross Rubin contributes Switched On, a column about consumer technology.

It's that special time of year between the post-holiday sales and the pre-CES hype that presents an opportunity to consider some of the most innovative devices of the year. Switched On is proud to present the Saluting Wares Improving Technology's Contribution to Humanity awards, also known as The Switchies. This year marks the sixth annual Switchies, which are decided based on a rigorous examination of the opinion of me, and do not reflect the opinion of Engadget or its editors. For that latter honor, nominees will need to win an Engadget Award. Let's roll out the red carpet then.

No bond in Church's Chicken shooting

Tribune reporter

1:32 p.m. CST, December 31, 2011

The man charged in the fatal shooting of two teenagers and the wounding of five others at a South Side chicken restaurant this week was ordered held with no bond today.

Arthur Chaney, of the 6600 block of South Peoria Street, did not appear in bond court this morning because he was at St. Bernard Hospital and Health Care Center being treated for sickle cell anemia.

Chaney was charged with two counts of first-degree murder and five counts of attempted first-degree murder, according to officials. His next hearing was set for Tuesday.

Police said a fight broke out between two people outside the Church's Chicken restaurant located on the 6600 block of South Halsted Street Tuesday night. The gunman chased the other person inside of the crowded restaurant and opened fire, striking several people, police said.

Jawan Ross, 16, and Dantril Brown, 17, were killed. Five others were wounded and taken to area hospitals, police said.

County taking applications for 120 part-time bus driver jobs

Miami-Dade Transit is looking for part-time bus drivers now that some veteran full-time bus drivers are being trained to become Metrorail operators for the forthcoming elevated train line to Miami International Airport.

According to an MDT statement, people interested in the job can fill out an application via online at www.miamidade.gov/jobs through Tuesday.

?Those who are selected can earn as they learn,? the MDT statement said. ?Bus operator trainees earn $14.71 per hour, and continue gaining experience as part-time bus operators.?

By this spring, Metrorail is scheduled to begin operating its new line from the current Earlington Heights station to the massive public transportation hub known as the Miami Intermodal Center, which is being built just east of MIA.

MDT said it plans to hire 120 part-time bus drivers. MDT currently has 262 part-timers and 1,372 full-timers to drive its 822 buses.

To be selected, applicants must pass a background check and physical exam. They also must have a high school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED), a photo identification such as a Florida driver?s license, and proof of having passed the general knowledge, air-brake and passenger transport sections of the commercial driver license exam.

Those interested in applying can also obtain information by calling the Miami-Dade County Job Information Hot Line at 305-375-5627 or by visiting a South Florida Workforce One-Stop Career Center. Those without Internet access can use a computer at a public library.

Chinese bus driver infected with bird flu dies (AP)

BEIJING ? A Chinese bus driver who tested positive for the H5N1 bird flu virus died Saturday in a city bordering Hong Kong, health officials said, in the country's first reported case of the disease in humans in 18 months.

The man surnamed Chen died in the wealthy southern city of Shenzhen, provincial health officials said. Shenzhen is separated by a small river from Hong Kong, where thousands of birds have been slaughtered after two were confirmed to have the virus last week.

During the month prior to his fever, Chen, 39, apparently had no direct contact with poultry and did not travel out of Shenzhen, a metropolis of 10 million people.

H5N1 rarely infects humans and usually only those who come into close contact with diseased poultry. But among those infected, nearly 60 percent die, and scientists are closely watching the virus for any signs it is becoming more easily transmissible from human to human.

Chen developed a fever on Dec. 21 and was hospitalized on Dec. 25, city and provincial authorities said in a statement. Health Ministry experts confirmed on Saturday that he was infected with H5N1, the provincial health department said.

The Guangdong health department also said 120 people who had close contact with Chen have not developed any abnormal symptoms.

The Ministry of Health has informed the World Health Organization about the case, local authorities said.

WHO says globally there have been 336 human deaths from 573 confirmed bird flu cases since 2003. Of these, 40 cases were in China, 26 of which were fatal.

Chen's death comes a week after two dead birds tested positive for the virus in Hong Kong.

More than 19,000 birds at a Hong Kong market were slaughtered and imports and sales of live poultry were banned for three weeks after a chicken carcass tested positive for H5N1. Lab tests later confirmed that an Oriental magpie robin found dead on Dec. 17 was also infected.

China's last reported human case of H5N1 was in June 2010. A pregnant 22-year-old woman from central Hubei province died after being exposed to sick and dead poultry.
