MINNEAPOLIS (AP) ? State Sen. Julianne Ortman is running to be the Republican candidate for U.S. Senate against incumbent Democrat Al Franken next year.

Ortman kicks off her campaign Saturday at a park in Waconia. The Carver County town west of Minneapolis is in the Senate district Ortman has represented for the last decade.

In a fundraising pitch Saturday, Ortman says she has a record in the Senate of ?standing with the people and against big government.? In addition to serving in the Senate, Ortman has worked as administrative manager in the office of Hennepin County Sheriff Rich Stanek.

Two other Republicans are in the race to challenge Franken. They are Mike McFadden, a businessman from suburban St. Paul, and Jim Abeler, a state representative from Anoka.

Franken is seeking a second term.
