Let?s start with the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program. It is a federal grant that is described on sbir.gov as ?a highly competitive program that encourages domestic small businesses to engage in Federal Research/Research and Development (R/R&D) that has the potential for commercialization.?? There are eleven federal agencies that participate in the program the includes three phases. Phase I, the startup phase, ?explores the technical merit or feasibility of an idea or technology.?? Of course, there are some basic requirements that must be met to be eligible for the program as well.
Small Business Technology Transfer Research (STTR) ?is the expansion of the public/private sector partnership to include the joint venture opportunities for small businesses and nonprofit research institutions.? This program ?bridges the gap? between the science and commercialization of the innovation.? STTR has 5 participating federal agencies, three phases similar to the SBIR program along with eligibility requirements that apply to both the small business and nonprofit research institution.
Remember, the topics for the grants are determined by the participating federal agency so they focus on ?national interests.?? These grants are also looking for work that is ?cutting edge? so participants should be familiar with past and current efforts in their field.
