Random shooting, bombings kill 15 across Iraq

BAGHDAD (AP) ? A series of attacks across Iraq on Sunday killed 15 people, including a random shooting and the killing of a judge, authorities said.

Violence has been on the rise in Iraq all year, but the number of attacks against civilians and security forces has spiked during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, which began early last month. The surge in the bloodshed is raising fears of a return to the widespread killing that pushed the country to the brink of civil war after the 2003 U.S.-led invasion.

The deadliest attack took place late Sunday night when gunmen in a speeding car opened fire randomly on a gathering of people on a street in the oil-rich city of Kirkuk, killing four people and wounding three, said Kirkuk deputy police chief Maj. Gen. Torhan Abdul-Rahman Youssef.

A bomb later exploded inside a cafe in western Baghdad shortly before midnight, killing three and wounding 12, police said.

Earlier in the day, police officials said a roadside bomb struck an army patrol near the northern city of Mosul, killing three soldiers.

In Tikrit in central Iraq, a car bomb killed Judge Sajid Abdul-Amir as he was driving to his work, police said.

In eastern Baghdad, two people were killed in a blast, police said. Meanwhile, mortar rounds landed on houses in the capital's western suburbs, killing two people, authorities said.

Medical officials confirmed the casualty figures toll for the attacks. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to talk to the media.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attacks, though security forces and civilians are frequently targeted by al-Qaida's Iraq branch.

With Saturday's attacks, at least 612 people have been killed since the start of Ramadan, according to an Associated Press count. Along with security officials being killed, there have been multiple bloody attacks targeting civilians in cafes as they broke their daily fast. It's been the bloodiest Ramadan in Iraq since 2007.

(AP) ? Alex Rodriguez brushed aside any worries about a pending suspension, saying he's headed to Chicago and plans to play for the New York Yankees on Monday night.

"I'm excited to play Monday," the star third baseman said after drawing four straight walks with Double-A Trenton on Saturday night. "I can't wait to see my teammates. I feel like I can help them win."

Rodriguez said he would work out Sunday ? no one disclosed the site ? and then travel to Chicago, where the Yankees will open a three-game series with the White Sox on Monday.

No matter what else happens?

"I'm flying to Chicago," he said.

Major League Baseball and the Yankees turned down requests Saturday to meet with Rodriguez's camp and the union about the embattled star's expected drug penalty, two people familiar with the talks told The Associated Press.

The overtures were made two days before MLB was poised to hand Rodriguez a lengthy suspension for his part in the Biogenesis case. The two people spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because no public statements were authorized.

"I've been on the field the last 5? hours. I haven't seen or heard anything," Rodriguez said. "My focus has been on baseball. As far as any of that stuff, I'll let those guys take care of what they need to take care of."

Before Rodriguez took the field, his side reached out to the Yankees and union head Michael Weiner contacted MLB Executive Vice President Rob Manfred. The Yankees and MLB said they had no interest in such talks.

There was always the chance, however, that further negotiations could take place at the last minute.

"I'll have an opportunity, when the time is right, to tell my full story," Rodriguez said.

The New York Post, Daily News and New York Times reported the discussions earlier Saturday.

There hasn't been any definite word on the severity of Rodriguez's looming penalty, with speculation ranging from a lifetime ban to a suspension through the 2014 season.

Also possible, according to those familiar with the talks, was a suspension lasting until Aug. 31, 2014, the day before all teams are permitted to expand their rosters from 25 players to 40.

The 38-year-old Rodriguez hasn't played in the majors this season. The three-time American League MVP is recovering from hip surgery and a strained quadriceps.

A day after Rodriguez homered for Trenton, Thunder manager Tony Franklin hedged on whether A-Rod was ready to rejoin the majors.

"That's not for me to say," Franklin said. "His swing is getting better. He's running better. He's doing the baseball things OK right now. But that's a different game up there."

"I think he can handle it because he's been there for a number of years," he said. "I don't think he'll be surprised by anything on the baseball field despite what's going on now. He's been one of the best baseball players I have ever seen. Once they decide he's ready to go back, I don't think he'll have any trouble adapting at all."

Rodriguez certainly had no trouble tracking balls, drawing three of his four walks on full-count pitches against Reading. He swung through a 91 mph fastball on a 3-0 pitch his third time up in the fifth and flipped his bat.

A high-and-tight fastball backed him off the plate in the seventh, and he turned and smiled, thankful the pitch didn't hit him.

Rodriguez ran the bases, then left the game after the seventh. He gave his batting gloves and a bat to fans in the sellout crowd of 8,113 before heading into the dugout.

"I feel great," Rodriguez said. "It was great to see a lot of pitches."

A few minutes before the national anthem, he chatted up fans near the dugout, fist-pumped a kid and walked off to have a catch.

Rodriguez caught a knuckling line drive by the game's first batter and later fielded a grounder and began an inning-ending double play.

Batting second, Rodriguez walked to the plate to Jay-Z's "On To The Next One" and received a mixture of cheers and boos in the first. He fouled off a 2-2 pitch before eventually drawing a walk.

Rodriguez slowly went first to third on a double off the right-field wall and was stranded. He also walked in the third while his girlfriend, former pro wrestler Torrie Wilson, held up her cell phone to video the action from a second-row seat behind the plate.

In the top of the second, Rodriguez ranged to his right to field a grounder and threw high and wide to second. It was ruled an infield hit, though he probably would've made the play a few years ago.

The next inning, Rodriguez fielded a slow bouncer down the line and made a strong throw to first to get the out. He heard loud cheers as he jogged slowly to the dugout, looking around and seemingly taking in the crowd's appreciation.

Raytheon sees 'never-ending opportunity' in Patriot missile system

By Andrea Shalal-Esa

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Raytheon Co is poised to book billions of dollars worth of orders for its Patriot air and missile defense system in the coming months, underscoring the resurgence of a weapon first developed to defend Europe against a possible Soviet attack.

Three decades later, the system has been upgraded multiple times and more than 200 fire units are in use in a dozen countries, with additional customers in talks to buy into a system that just a few years ago looked ready to wind down.

Raytheon Chief Executive William Swanson last month called the system "a never-ending opportunity" after a major redesign as part of a $3.3 billion order from the United Arab Emirates in 2008 that has spawned multiple new orders and launched a new chapter in the program's history.

"Once you upgrade it you can go back to all your other customers and offer them the upgraded hardware to reduce their costs, reduce the spare content and so forth. So it's a never-ending opportunity for us here at Raytheon," Swanson told analysts on an earnings call.

Raytheon builds Patriot - a long-range, high-altitude, all-weather system - and acts as the systems integrator for the PAC-3 missile, which is built by Lockheed Martin Corp.

Raytheon officials say they expect several large orders for Patriot systems in the second half of the year, including a deal for 11 fire units from Qatar valued at around $2 billion. They also expect an order exceeding $500 million from Kuwait that could expand further in coming years through related contracts for modernization, spares and services.

Turkey is also weighing a large order that would be worth around $500 million initially, but could expand later.

The Patriot system is already used by 12 countries - United States, Netherlands, Germany, Japan, Israel, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Taiwan, Greece, Spain, South Korea and UAE. Raytheon is in active talks to enlarge that group and upgrade existing systems, according to Tim Glaeser, a vice president with Raytheon's Integrated Defense Systems (IDS) division.

Poland is considering buying equipment from Germany, which Raytheon would then upgrade, and India has expressed an interest, as have Singapore and Malaysia, Glaeser said.

The company says more than $400 million has been invested into making the Patriot system faster, smarter and tougher. Components have gotten smaller, computer chips are an eighth of the size they were in 2006, and new units are built in an upgraded facility that uses computer-controlled tools.

Glaeser said the company has streamlined production significantly, making it cheaper to build the Patriot system.

For instance, he said the company had driven the cost of the system's complex antenna down 300 percent, making it possible to swap the whole antenna out if it was not working, rather than having to waste time and money troubleshooting its 5,800 parts.

Raytheon doesn't just earn by building the systems. It also makes money through constant software and other upgrades and maintenance. In June, the company won a $116 million contract from the U.S. Army to provide engineering services, which company officials say will allow them to work on enhancements funded jointly by the U.S. military and international customers.

All Patriot users participate in a special council that meets yearly to consider engineering changes.

MORE USERS, LOWER COSTS

Will Lovell, director of production in the Army's Patriot project office, said the international partnership helped push down the cost of owning and operating the system for all users.

The addition of each new user helped reduce the cost per unit for participating country since the program's baseline costs remained the same, Lovell told Reuters.

"It ... benefits everyone when more countries select Patriot as their missile defense system," he said.

Loren Thompson with the Virginia-based Lexington Institute said Raytheon's Patriot system was riding a major military modernization wave in the Middle East, but also benefited from the U.S. Army's decision to pull out of the next-generation MEADS system that was initially meant to replace Patriot.

A Lockheed-led international consortium is developing the Medium Extended Air and Missile Defense System with funding from the United States, Germany and Italy. Washington plans to end funding this year, after the development program is completed.

"With the waning of MEADS, Patriot is likely to remain the pre-eminent air defense system in the world for the next 20 years," he said. "The reason it's a never-ending opportunity for Raytheon is because its successor was killed."

One of MEADS's key attributes was a 360-degree radar that allows the system to spot threats coming from any direction, something Patriot cannot do.

Glaeser said Raytheon is "exploring options for a 360-degree sensor to meet the requests of our international parties." The Army has said it hopes to harvest some technologies from the MEADS program and reuse them, but it has not released details.

Bio-inspired design may lead to more energy efficient windows

[unable to retrieve full-text content]Scientists are turning to nature to find a way to make windows more energy efficient. In a recent article, researchers describe a novel process to cut down on heat loss during the winter and keep buildings cool during the summer. Their "bio-inspired approach to thermal control for cooling (or heating) building window surfaces" calls for attaching optically clear, flexible elastomer sheets, bonded to regular glass window panes.

CBS retaliates, blocks online shows for Time Warner cable customers

By Lisa Richwine

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - U.S. broadcast network CBS took its dispute with Time Warner Cable to the Internet, blocking access to shows on the CBS.com website for the cable operator's customers in New York and Los Angeles.

The move followed Time Warner Cable's decision on Friday to drop CBS from its systems in those markets and some others, an escalation of a weeks-long fight over the fees it pays to carry the network.

CBS's retaliation showed the increasingly powerful position content owners enjoy online. Time Warner Cable controls access to CBS programs seen on TV, but it is powerless to do the same for its online customers.

CBS, home to hits such as "The Big Bang Theory" and "NCIS," said online access to full episodes of CBS shows was suspended for Time Warner Cable customers "as a result of Time Warner Cable's decision to drop CBS and Showtime from their market."

"As soon as CBS is restored on Time Warner Cable systems in affected markets, that content will be accessible again," a company statement said.

Time Warner Cable spokeswoman Maureen Huff said CBS had shown "utter lack of regard for consumers" by blocking access for the cable provider's customers.

"CBS enjoys the privilege of using public-owned airwaves to deliver their programming - they should not be allowed to abuse that privilege," she said.

Consumer advocacy group Public Knowledge said CBS' decision to block online access was "consistent with what we've heard from some elements of the broadcasting industry recently - they simply place little value on their over-the-air viewers."

"They are in the cable programming business, not the broadcasting business, the group added. "It is no longer clear why broadcasters of this kind should continue to hold the billion-dollar licenses the public gave them for free, if they no longer want to use them for their intended purpose."

a new opinion in Computer about Apple iPad 2 Wi-Fi 16 GB

I bought this iPad when it was first released from HMV for ?399, but it has since gone down in price. I bought it as an upgrade from the original iPad 1. I saw there was a lot of hype about it so I wanted to see if it would be any better than the first iPad. And it was!

The 9.7" screen is brilliant and the resolution of it is really brilliant, viewing photos and videos is amazing. The iPad has been dropped a few times but it has proven to be hard wearing, although it is quite easy to scratch the back. The screen has gained a small crack but that was from leaving it on the floor and someone stepped on it... oops...

The battery life is very good, but it never lasts the full 10 hours like it is supposed to. I usually get about 8 hours out of it on full charge. It is lightweight and easy to carry around which is a plus.

The app store has a wide range of apps, a lot of which are free or very cheap, and if you choose the right ones they are great! They are very easy to install, straight from the iPad, however, you are forced to choose a very complicated password, which can be hard to remember sometimes and typing it out can be tedious because you have to change it into capitals and number which seems to be a very annoying task for the iPad, as you have to change the keyboard and it is hard to tell if the capital letters are still on.

It is a pleasure to browse the internet on, and the swift movements and shortcuts are easy to use.

Unfortunately, it has no flashplayer which means the only games you can play are the ones you download on the app store. There is also a limit to which websites you can use. You are forced to use a youtube app, which doesn't seem to have as many videos and not always the specific ones you are searching for.

The charger for the iPad is quite flimsy, and would break in a family household with more than one person using it. It is expensive to replace the chargers, along with any other apple accessories.

Because of the release of the new iPad it is very difficult to update the iPad 2. I can't do it myself using itunes and am forced to take it into the apple store and have one of the "genius'" take about half an hour to update it. This is very inconvenient.

DO NOT buy the original apple iPad cover. It gets dirty really quickly and the magnet weakens over time making it easier to drop the iPad. It is also ridiculously expensive for what it is, and you would be a lot better off buying a more protective iPad case which will actually protect your iPad from being scratched on the back.

Apart from that, it was a great purchase, but do follow my advice!

Magellan Midstream Beats Earnings, Lags Rev

Pipeline operator Magellan Midstream Partners LP (MMP) announced better-than-expected second-quarter 2013 earnings, on the back of strong activities from transportation and terminal operations.

The Tulsa, Oklahoma-based oil distributor reported earnings per unit (EPU) of 65 cents (excluding mark-to-market commodity-related pricing adjustments), surpassing the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 53 cents and the prior-year quarter adjusted profit of 51 cents.

Total revenue of $443.9 million was down slightly (by 1.3%) year over year and also fell short of the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $452.0 million. Substantial fall in revenue from product sales hurt the results.

Stock Split

In mid-Oct 2012, Magellan Midstream completed the split of its limited partner units in the 2:1 ratio. The quarterly results reflect the effects of the stock split.

Quarterly Distribution & Distributable cash flow

Magellan Midstream informed that distributable cash flow during this reported quarter increased by 26% to $168.2 million as compared to the year ago period.

Recently, Magellan Midstream raised its second-quarter 2013 cash distribution by 5% sequentially and 13% year over year to 53.25 cents per unit ($2.13 per unit annualized). Magellan Midstream?s new distribution is payable on Aug 14 to unitholders of record as on Aug 7, 2013.

Segmental Performance

Refined Products: In this segment, quarterly operating profits (before affiliate G&A and D&A expenses) were recorded at $177.8 million, slightly higher than that of the year ago period. The 3.3% increase in transportation volumes favored this quarter?s result.

Crude Oil: In this segment, operating margin was $40.5 million, up significantly by 78.1% year over year due to increased crude oil transportation volumes and rates.

Together Alone: Computers, Technology & Kids | Psych Central

Together Alone: Computers, Technology & KidsWhat?s happening in the ad world these days? One TV ad running in my area is of a mother who, the narrator chirps, is a master multitasker. She is on a cell phone while making her kids breakfast and sending them off for the day. She?s on the cell phone while doing the grocery shopping with her kids.

She doesn?t even take that phone off her ear when going through the checkout line. Yes, she?s smiling all the time but how is it that whoever is on the other end of that phone is more important than relating to her children and the people in front of her?

Another ad: A woman tells us she is in charge of the family finances and she is so, so happy that she?s found a bundle of cable services that is faster than her old company. We follow her through the house as she indicates her daughter in her room on a computer, her husband in the living room on his laptop and her son in the family room on his tablet. Everyone is happy to have speedy Internet. Everyone is in a different room.

Together alone. Are the ads reflecting American life or are they showing us what we should accept as ?normal?? The people who make the ads know what sells. What they seem to be selling these days is the idea that it is normative for family members to be more interested in their electronics than each other. They may even be right.

According to a recent study from the Kaiser Family Foundation, kids between the ages of 8 to 18 are now spending more than seven and a half hours a day on devices with screens (computers, TVs, and other electronics.) That doesn?t count time spent texting or talking on cell phones. Meanwhile, research shows that American working parents spend an average of 19 minutes a day of quality time with their children! A study by the U.S. Department of Education found that mothers spend less than 30 minutes a day talking with their children while other polls show that fathers spend an average of 15 minutes per day.

Do the math! Who, or rather what, is spending the most time with our children?

Yes, I know. Computers are a fact of life. A kid who grows up in a home without one is at a decided disadvantage. More and more teachers assume the kids have one available and create assignments that require the ability to search the Internet for information. Social inclusion seems to require it. Cell phones provide a measure of safety for kids who are home alone or who are traveling from place to place.

But there?s a dark side. The time with computers can slide from use to abuse so gradually that we barely notice. That?s why the multitasker mom in the TV ad is so disturbing. She probably isn?t aware of how that little box on her ear has separated her from her children and her community. She thinks she can both be on the phone and in life. As happy as she seems to be, she?s missing interactions that are important to her children?s development and to her relationship with them. She?s missing the opportunity to give her kids a warm send-off in the morning. She isn?t teaching her kids about nutrition, budgeting, and courtesy at the grocery store. The message she is giving them is that they are along for her ride, not important in their own right.

As connected as everyone seems to be with the social world, it takes some effort to make genuine connections within the family. Kids need the nurturing that only another human being can provide. They need role models from life, not from TV, about how to be an adult, how to be in loving relationship with a partner, and how to parent their children. They need more protection than ?nannyware? can provide from material that is too mature or too stimulating for them to handle. They need to learn how to get information from people as well as from Google. They need parents to monitor their progress and school and to teach them to value schooling. They need gentle teaching by loving parents about what is important culturally and spiritually.

The mom who happily takes us through her perfect house, finding her perfectly happy family members in separate corners, should be concerned. Is her tour just a moment in time, or is it a reflection of the general state of relationships in her family? If it is the latter, she and her husband have some talking to do about how to fix their lack of connection with their kids.

The American Academy of Pediatrics has weighed in on the subject. They recommend that parents establish ?screen-free? zones in our homes. That means no TVs or computers in kids? bedrooms and limiting entertainment time on computers to two hours a day or less. Further, they stress the importance of monitoring what our kids are watching (and playing if in online gaming) for quality.

It almost doesn?t matter what adults do with kids as long as there is an opportunity to talk, to have affectionate physical contact and to pass on information, values, and beliefs. Having a game of catch outside, chatting while making dinner together or washing the car or snuggling up on the couch to read stories all provide the one-on-one, adult-to-kid time that gives our kids things no screen, no matter what the app, can.

Smartphone cradle, app detect toxins, bacteria

URBANA, Ill. (AP) ? Afraid there may be peanuts or other allergens hiding in that cookie? Thanks to a cradle and app that turn your smartphone into a handheld biosensor, you may soon be able to run on-the-spot tests for food safety, environmental toxins, medical diagnostics and more.

The handheld biosensor was developed by researchers at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. A series of lenses and filters in the cradle mirror those found in larger, more expensive laboratory devices. Together, the cradle and app transform a smartphone into a tool that can detect toxins and bacteria, spot water contamination and identify allergens in food.

Kenny Long, a graduate researcher at the university, says the team was able to make the smartphone even smarter with modifications to the cellphone camera.

Download hit game Color Zen for free, via Apple Store app

Apple offers Color Zen for free through Apple Store app

The Apple Store app for iPhone has added a free content offer as previous reports indicated that it would, letting app users download the game Color Zen for free.

To download the app, open the Apple Store app and select the Stores tab. Once you've picked the store closest to you, you'll see the game offer at the top of the list, just below the store's information. Selecting the game will take you to a page, where you'll hit a button to be taken to the App Store to redeem the offer.

This is likely to be the first of several such offerings. It's unknown at this time if Apple will offer media like music, movies, or TV episodes, or stick with apps. Apple is planning a big retail push, and getting customers to use the Apple Store app is part of that push. It serves not only as a portal through which customers can buy Apple products, but also as a way to let them find the Apple Stores closest to them, and hopefully, when they want to buy an Apple device, they'll head to the nearest Apple Store over another retail location.

Anyone taking advantage and downloading the free app? What other types of incentives would you be interested in, in-app?

The Friends We've Made

Hi everyone! As you've probably heard (So Near, and Yet So Far), we need another $4000 to cover the costs of cleaning, upgrading, replacing, etc all of our cams for the next nesting season. We'd like to add a second cam with night vision at Delta, sound at Harrison Mills, more bandwidth at Lafarge - and it would be nice if eagles nested successfully at White Rock, though that is a bit beyond our ability to organize. But the rest is possible, if we have the funds.

However, that's not the only reason we need money. It costs in the neighborhood of $30,000/year to keep our website, forum, and cams physically streaming to the internet. Part of that is included in the cost for each cam - but that $30,000 per year also covers the expenses of our forum and website, and the media gallery - and a whole lot of photos that have been uploaded over the last few years for everyone to enjoy.

? ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ please ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ?

I used this image below (which clicks bigger) last year (with a few changes - my avatar in the lower right corner is now Birdie from Harrison Mills - almost ready to fledge!) - but the message is still the same. There are now lots of cams on lots of nests all around the world - and lots of places and ways to gather to discuss what's happening at your favorite cams - and to paraphrase what forum member terrytvgal says so eloquently in her signature line - I'm here because of the friends I've made. love

I think perhaps I'm not alone in finding the forum and website a great source of information about eagles and other wildlife - and a great place to chat with like-minded individuals who also are amazed at what we can see on the cams. We moved to this new forum at the beginning of 2010 - a bit over 3-1/2 years ago - and there are already over half a million posts here! 1383 people have posted at least once, 750 have posted 5 or more times, 234 have posted more than a hundred times - and 87 of us have posted more than a thousand times!

I know that many of you have already donated - and I would like to thank you again for your support! You're the greatest! Left thumb up

And if you are one of the other 700+ people who have posted several times - please consider making a donation in support of the costs of maintaining the forum, website and other infrastructure. We're encouraging people to use CanadaHelps to make their donations - you'll get a receipt almost instantly, and it saves HWF valuable time and resources. And you don't need to be in Canada to use CanadaHelps - just click the blue button! Or you can choose one of our other Five Easy Ways to Donate.

~

And we do know that financial donations aren't the best way for everyone to contribute - so I'd like to take a moment here to also thank those who help out on the forum and website, and those who watch and control the cams and report and take s'caps and make videos - and make this the educational resource it was meant to be, and those who keep things running smoothly on Facebook and the various chat threads and all sorts of places that I'm only now learning about, and our content providers who add a whole 'nother level to the data on our forum by reporting on an amazing variety of wildlife. Thank you all, from the bottom of my heart. love And thank you all on behalf of Hancock Wildlife Foundation - it's you who make this such a marvelous resource.

And I'd like to close with the other reason I'm here, besides all the friends I've made - which is that I truly believe this is the best site to watch eaglets like Tux from Delta 2, Feathers from Lafarge and Birdie from Harrison Mills grow from little balls of fluff to fully-flighted young eagles in about 12 weeks. There are other forums that watch individual cams - but we have the option of discussing and comparing dozens of cams. And thanks to your support - all of our nests have at least one pan-tilt-zoom cam - which provides pictures like these (click bigger):

Please donate now so we can see what the next year will bring.

Thank you!

Credits: Thanks to cococat9 for the s'cap of Feathers ready to fly; to IrishEyes for the s'cap of tiny Birdie being fed; to mjb for the s'cap of almost-ready-to-fly Birdie looking thoughtful; and to all the zoomers who make s'caps like this possible (the other s'caps are mine); thanks to terrytvgal for her signature quote "I came for the eagles, and stayed for the friends I made"; and thanks to the 69 members whose avatars I used for the collage - and I wish I could have found a way to use them all.

ELLE Reviews The Heat | ELLE UK

Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy show the guys how it?s done in this comedy from the director of Bridesmaids.

Bullock is Ashburn, an uptight FBI agent on the trail of a drug dealer in Boston. Mullins (McCarthy) is on a one-woman mission to clean up the mean streets of Boston.

Forced to pair up, they fight like cat and dog until a bust-up with some patronising, sexist cops. Then it?s these two against the world ? watch out world!

It?s great fun watching these comically gifted actresses stick it to the man in no uncertain terms.

McCarthy is hilarious as tough, mouthy, Mullins who can floor a suspect with one choice insult. Meanwhile Bullock gamely sports a terrible suit and an awkward gait as the workaholic finally finding a friend.

With its paper-thin plot, this isn?t quite up there with Bridesmaids, but it?s still a very funny, and refreshingly female, buddy movie.

Fed keeps stimulus going, leaves rates unchanged

Economy

A general view of the U.S. Federal Reserve building as the morning sky breaks over Washington, July 31, 2013.

JONATHAN ERNST / Reuters

A general view of the U.S. Federal Reserve building as the morning sky breaks over Washington, July 31, 2013.

Steady as she goes. The Federal Reserve will keep interest rates unchanged and keep buying $85 billion in bonds every month while the economy keeps improving at a "modest" pace, the central bank said Wednesday.

Amid a backdrop of gradually improving economic data and concerns of asset price inflation, the Fed provided no further clues after its policy meeting this week that it will be easing back the throttle on easy money.

No changes are imminent to interest rate, but the $85 billion monthly money-printing program known as quantitative easing will be trimmed back only if the data points continue to improve.

The market has been hotly anticipating the next move in Fed policy, with tapering of asset purchases likely to begin in September.

After the decision came down, stocks added to previous narrow gains while bond yields moved little.

In all, the Fed exacted few changes to the language from its last meeting, leaving open the possibility that it could add or subtract from the QE purchases depending on conditions.

What was missing from this month was the post-meeting news conference from Chairman Ben Bernanke.

The central bank chief rattled markets in May when he suggested that QE likely would end in 2014.

Markets took the statement to mean that the Fed also would begin to raise interest rates sooner than expected. A cadre of Fed officials followed that meeting with public statements aimed at quelling fears that money tightening was coming, and the massive stock market rally of 2013 resumed.

(AP) ? Wearing a black rain suit and a soft smile, Inbee Park looked calm as ever standing before the imposing Royal & Ancient clubhouse just moments before she teed off Thursday in the Women's British Open.

Only after her unsteady round of 3-under 69 did Park reveal perhaps the biggest surprise at St. Andrews.

She was nervous.

"But then once the round started, and especially playing so good in the first few holes, that really gave me a lot of confidence," Park said. "I didn't feel much pressure when I was playing during the round. I'm just glad that it's already started and I got the first round under my belt."

Park wound up three shots behind Morgan Pressel and Camilla Lennarth of Sweden, a solid start to what should be a fascinating week at the home of golf.

Her pursuit of history looked more like a high-speed chase when the 25-year-old South Korean made six birdies in 10 holes. Three poor tee shots, two three-putt bogeys and one double bogey from a pot bunker on the back nine made her realize there's a reason no golfer has ever won four majors in a single year.

"Felt like a roller coaster today," Park said.

She was only too happy it finally stopped with a 6-foot birdie on the 18th hole, ending a slide during which she dropped four shots in a five-hole span.

Pressel, one spot out of making the Solheim Cup team this week, caught a break when the rain and wind never materialized in the afternoon. She made seven birdies in a round of 66 that gave her a share of the lead with Lennarth, who birdied the 18th.

Stacy Lewis, the former No. 1 player in women's golf, shot 31 on the tougher back nine for a 67 to be part of a large group that included former U.S. Women's Open champion Na Yeon Choi and Nicole Castrale. Another shot behind were Paula Creamer, Catriona Matthew and Lizette Salas.

Those who played early had reason to worry.

Lewis was on the 10th tee when she looked over at Park knocking in an 18-foot birdie putt, her fifth of the round. Castrale had not yet teed off when her husband saw a leaderboard with Park's name in a familiar position.

"It's amazing, the fact we all possibly can play with history," Castrale said. "It's amazing what she's done to this point, the composure she has. I don't know what she shot today, but I'm going to guess she'll be in the mix come Sunday."

If there were nerves on the first tee for Park, she didn't show it.

She opened with a wedge into about 7 feet for birdie, and then she really poured it on with an astounding display of her putting stroke. She rolled in a 30-foot birdie putt on No. 3 with perfect pace. She made an 18-foot birdie on No. 4 and a 35-footer on No. 6. It didn't look as if she would ever miss. Her sixth birdie came at the 10th, when her sand wedge checked up to 5 feet right of the hole. Another birdie.

Just like that, there was a feeling of inevitability about this Women's British Open, much as there was for Tiger Woods when he won the British Open for the first time at St. Andrews by eight shots to complete the career Grand Slam in 2000.

But not for long.

It started with a tee shot into thick grass to the right of the 12th fairway. She saved par with another great putt, this one from 15 feet, but she couldn't save herself much longer. After another poor tee shot on the 13th, she came dangerously close to a large gorse bush. She chipped to 15 feet and made bogey, her first of the day. A delicate pitch-and-run helped her avoid another bogey on the 15th after a third tee shot to the right.

Park appeared to be in big trouble when her approach rolled toward the high face of the vetted wall in a pot bunker short of the 16th hole. She considered a shot over the wall toward the flag, but then wisely turned sideways and blasted out to some 90 feet away, her ball about halfway between the flags of No. 2 and No. 16 on the double green. Her first putt wasn't hit nearly hard enough, and her par putt from 15 feet caught the lip.

"A little disappointing, but I'm glad that I've done that in the first round instead of the final round," she said.

It was only her second double bogey in a major this year.

She also three-putted the 17th from 40 feet when her first attempt came up 10 feet short, leading to another three-putt bogey.

"I thought that I fixed my problems coming into this week. I was hitting it so good on the practice round and I didn't really miss any balls," Park said. "I thought I was really prepared, but those couple of bad shots really shocked me. I couldn't really concentrate on the greens when I hit those shots. I've learned my lesson. Good thing I've got my time to fix that today and tomorrow."

Only four months ago, Park and Lewis were battling for No. 1 in the world until the South Korean left everyone in her wake by adding to her collection of majors. The Kraft Nabisco Championship put her in position to take No. 1 away from Lewis, and the playoff win at the LPGA Championship and four-shot win at the U.S. Women's Open brought her to the brink of something grand.

Lewis and Karrie Webb were on the 11th tee when they saw Park make another birdie.

"We both looked at each other and shook our heads," Lewis said. "We knew she was going to be there, but it's like she keeps doing it over and over and over again."

Lewis made up ground on the back nine. And when rough weather didn't arrive, plenty of others took aim on the Old Course. Park was tied for 18th on a day in which 73 players broke par. Her biggest test might come if the strong wind arrives before Sunday. She's not ready to think that far ahead.

"If I could walk out of this tournament with no regrets, that's what I'm looking to do," she said. "That's all I could ask for."
